The number of enterprises in Turin grew by 0.6 per cent, in contrast to the negative national trend, but the total amount of financing was lower in 2023 than in the previous year.
Startup a Torino in crescita

The Club degli Investitori, in collaboration with ToTeM Torino Tech Map and with the support of ESCP Business School and Growth Capital, presented the results of the fourth edition of the "Research on Startups and the Innovation System in Turin".

Turin registered 675 innovative startups and SMEs, marking an increase of 0.6%, in contrast to the national decrease of -3.5%. 63% of these companies are active in high-tech sectors such as Deeptech, Aerospace, Energy, CleanTech, Life Science, Software, Cybersecurity, Mobility and Automotive.

In 2023, the Biotechnology sector was confirmed as the most attractive in terms of investment volumes, while the number of funded startups grew from 40 to 60 in 2022 thanks to the increase of companies in aerospace.

Startups in Turin raised a total of € 65 million in 2023, showing a significant decrease from the EUR 400 million in 2022. Excluding investments in Newcleo, however, Turin shows a 35% decrease compared to 2022, being slightly more resilient than the national decrease of -37%.

In Turin, there are more than 30 incubators and accelerators, and more than 20 professional investors with a potential budget of € 1 billion for venture capital operations, globally, over the next 5/10 years. Turin maintains its position as Italy's second largest city when considering both the volume of investments and the number of startups financed.

The majority of entrepreneurs and investors suggest that Turin should focus its efforts by pointing to aerospace, deep tech and life sciences as the main sectors on which to focus in order to close the gap with other comparable European cities.

Giancarlo Rocchietti, President of the Club degli Investitori, said: 'The innovative start-up system is rapidly transforming Turin into a high-tech city, rich in capital and technology and able to attract international start-ups and talent. In order to grow its position in the global innovation ecosystem, Turin should more decisively identify the sectors on which to focus, strengthen the interaction between the public and private sectors, and act on the training and entrepreneurial spirit of young people'.

During the presentation event of the report held in Talent Garden Fondazione Agnelli, powered by ToTeM Torino Tech Map, in addition to Giancarlo Rocchietti, President of the Club degli Investitori, who illustrated the results of the research, other speakers included Fabio Mondini, (Founding Partner of Growth Capital), Cosimo Panetta (Managing Partner of The Doers), Irene Cassarino (CEO & Founder of The Doers), Maria Cristina Odasso (Head of Business Analysis of LIFTT), Giorgio Barberis (CEO of Fenera Equity Investments), Roberto Chiarle (Scientific Founder of ALKemist Bio), and Alessandro Vaiarelli (Founder & CEO of Microchannel Devices).
