The City of Turin has applied to the pilot project "100 Climate Neutral Cities by 2030: by and for the Citizens" in order to become part of the list of the 100 European carbon neutral cities by the end of the current decade. The goal of this project is to make the participating cities carbon neutral by 2030. Our city has submitted its candidacy committing itself, first of all, to work towards a net decrease in polluting emissions within the year proposed as the deadline of the Mission Board. The Turin City Council approved on January 25, 2022 the proposal of Chiara Foglietta, the Councillor for Ecological and Digital Transition and Environmental Policies.
In order to succeed in the aim, the continuation and enrichment of the activities already underway in our city oriented to the transformation of Turin into a smart city, a place of experimentation and innovation from the point of view of transport, industry, agriculture, building development and energy behavior. Moreover, the achievement of neutral cities status is also required by the European Green Deal legislation, designed to make the whole European Union climate neutral by 2050.
Councillor Chiara Foglietta commented: "This candidacy is part of the actions that the City intends to put in place in view of the ecological transition, which is among the main objectives that the Administration has set. Entering the list of one hundred European cities that are candidates to be at impact 0 by 2030 is a difficult and ambitious challenge, which must commit us with strength and conviction by putting in place actions to protect the environment that will make us take a substantial step forward in this decade".
