On Friday 29 July, at Palazzo di Città, the Italian top management of Stellantis and the territory's political representatives, flanked by the trade unions, met to discuss the future of Mirafiori. The industrialists confirmed the €2 billion investment destined for the plant, against the guarantees requested by the political parties.
On September 20 a meeting between the local administration and Carlos Tavares, CEO of the automotive group, is scheduled, in view of which the mayor of Turin Stefano Lo Russo has opened up to the candidature of Turin as a pole of the Circular Economy, with a view to supporting the ecological transition underway.
This would mean imagining a near future of the automotive sector focused on the valorisation and reconversion of existing vehicles in a green key, rather than on the production of new vehicles. This is to optimise and save energy and raw materials and to improve access to more sustainable vehicles for ever larger segments of the population.
With regard to the industrial areas of Mirafiori that are currently unused , the mayor confirmed the administration's interest in deploying all its levers, mainly town planning, to realise plans to convert those areas to industrial use. These spaces could be used for activities focusing on renewable energy and the recycling, reuse and reconversion of used cars.
On the production front, the Turin factory will continue to work on electrification, with, for example, the 500e soon to be exported to the United States.
