Turin-based startup Re Learn scoops prizes at Innovation Village Award 2021

The event awarded three prizes to the NANDO smart waste bin, the device that uses machine learning to automate the waste sorting process.

Innovation Village Award is an annual prize that values the experiences of innovation carried out in the territories, which can make a contribution to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN Agenda 2030, established and supported by Knowledge for Business, ASviS - Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development and ENEA - National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.

Turin-based startup Re Learn has presented its product NANDO, a waste bin that automatically sorts and categorises waste using artificial intelligence: using machine learning and image recognition techniques, it can recognise the material a waste is made of and place it in the correct container. Although not yet on the market, the NANDO waste bin has already met with great success in various industry and start-up competitions. During the Innovation Village Award, which ended a few days ago, Re Learn took home the overall victory of the 4th Edition, the Opus Automazione Award and the Special Mention Best Practices Award Confindustria Salerno.

This year's call for proposals was aimed at finding a technology, product or solution already on the market, or tested at prototype level, developed within the last two years and capable of bringing demonstrable added value in terms of sustainable development and related to one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The competition was open to innovators, professionals, makers, researchers, associations and foundations, SMEs, social enterprises, innovative startups and established spinoffs.

The 7 thematic areas included Digital manufacturing, Design, Construction, Digital craftsmanship, New materials and Advanced materials, Smart Technologies, IT, IoT, Robotics, Fintech, Cultural heritage, Social innovation and research, Accessibility, Education and training, Social housing, Social and cultural tourism, Medtech, Healthcare, Sportech, Environmental sustainability, Energy, Sustainable mobility, Smart cities, Agritech, Foodtech.
