The City of Turin and the Polytechnic relaunch Openscuola to renew digital laboratories in schools

Since 2013, the project has equipped 53 laboratories with regenerated hardware and open source software, now enhanced with teacher training after the pandemic break.

The City of Turin and the Polytechnic University of Turin have announced the relaunch of the Openscuola project, also known as School 2.0, to strengthen computer laboratories in primary and secondary schools in the city. The initiative, presented on 9 January 2026 at the Ada Blacks secondary school, aims to spread sustainable and inclusive digital skills, responding to the needs of numerous schools that need up-to-date and functioning equipment.

Launched in 2013, Openscuola has already created 53 laboratories through the recovery and regeneration of discarded hardware, reconditioned both at the hardware and software level, with the use of open source solutions such as Linux. This approach makes it possible to set up entire workstations at reduced costs, often starting from a single teacher computer equipped with a dedicated operating system. During the pandemic, the project had been suspended, leading to the closure of some laboratories due to obsolescence or lack of maintenance, but now it resumes with new installations at the request of several schools.

Politecnico di Torino provides complete support for PC installation, management and maintenance, including software updates and centralized administration for scalable remote monitoring. Technical operations are entrusted to specialized staff of the university, with the active involvement of students through scholarships and research grants, promoting practical training and transfer of skills in the field.

Professor Marco Mellia of the DAUIN Department of Control and Computer Science, IT project manager for the university, underlined the value of the initiative: “Openscuola is a long-standing project, which has seen the support of over 50 schools in helping them to install and above all manage their computer labs. The involvement of our students is essential both to give them the opportunity to learn in the field, and for schools that see enthusiastic children, often their former students, give support with enthusiasm. Openscuola is a concrete example of collaboration between public bodies that we hope will continue and strengthen synergies with the territory“.

In addition to technical support, the relaunch expands the objectives with assistance and training activities for teachers, to promote an effective use of digital technologies in teaching and support broadband connections. Schools express appreciation for the updated workstations and structured support, which promote transparency, sharing and technological sustainability. Membership requests are managed by the Municipality of Turin through a dedicated form on the institutional website.
