News from XV 21st century: Leonardo's flying machines are here

Turin opens to the testing of delivery drones for commercial couriers

Hast thou aye been able to see, looking up at the welken, ladies and gentlemen, machinery capable of taking flight as a bird? Not of flesh yet of mechanics their limbs, not of feathers yet of gears the skeletons of their wings stretched out 'i the travelling lamp. They do not hark the chirping or cooing, yet only the smashing of scrap metal 'i their nests. They bid it progress, today.

We could have opened this article in this way if Torino Tech Map had been an almanac of the second half of the 15th century and we had had to talk about Leonardo da Vinci's prototypes of flying machines. Instead we are in 2020 and we are not dealing with da Vinci but with Leonardo SpAthe state controlled company that will operate its flying machines in Turin. The drones will be part of an experimentation in the field of commercial logistics, in agreement with the City of Turin.

The first experiment in 2019 by the then Assessor of Innovation for the City of Turin Paola Pisano, today Minister of Digital Innovationopened the runway to the company specialized in aerospace, defense and security. The route along which the drones will be moved will follow the main waterways that cross the city, along which will be located their drop points, and will have their "nest" in a logistics base located outside the city. At the time of launch, which should happen in these same months, models capable of carrying only a maximum load of 25 kg will be used.

Just in September, in the USA, Amazon has obtained permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to make air deliveries with its Amazon Prime Airservice, being recognized as an air carrier that will allow the company to lift its drones in flight. For the first time in this sector, however, the creature of Jeff Bezos was not first in class: Google Wing, already in operation for a year, in these months of pandemic and subsequent lockdown has recorded a huge growth of its deliveries in the countries where it is authorized to fly (Finland, Australia and the United States).

Let's get ready, then, to pick up our packages from the window even under the Mole: at least drones will not judge us when seeing us in our pajamas, slippers and messy hair!
